Overview & Visitor Introduction
The Palace of Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from Louis XIV until the French Revolution, and remains one of the largest and most visited palace complexes in the world.
The estate has three main parts with different rules: the Palace itself (timed entry required), the Trianon Estate, and the Gardens — only the Palace requires a reservation.
History & Architectural Significance
Originally a hunting lodge, it was transformed by Louis XIV into the seat of the French court from 1682, and is famous for the Hall of Mirrors and its formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre.
The Trianon Estate — the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, and Marie-Antoinette's Hamlet — was built later as a more private royal retreat away from the main Palace.
