Once the seat of royal power and later Paris's most notorious Revolutionary-era prison, the Conciergerie held Marie-Antoinette during her final weeks before her execution in 1793.
It sits within the same medieval complex as Sainte-Chapelle, on the Île de la Cité, and like its neighbour requires a mandatory timed-entry reservation for every visitor.
History & Architectural Significance
Built in the 14th century as part of the royal palace on the Île de la Cité, the Conciergerie later became a prison, famously holding over 2,700 prisoners during the Reign of Terror, including Marie-Antoinette.
Its vaulted medieval halls, including the Salle des Gens d'Armes — one of the largest surviving medieval halls in Europe — remain largely intact today.
