Originally built as a church dedicated to Paris's patron saint, Sainte-Geneviève, the Panthéon has served since the French Revolution as a secular mausoleum honouring France's most celebrated citizens.
No reservation is needed for individual visitors — simply walk in during opening hours, which is a notably simpler rule than most of Paris's other major monuments.
History & Architectural Significance
Commissioned by Louis XV and built between 1758 and 1790 in a Neoclassical style modelled on Rome's own Pantheon, the building was repurposed as a mausoleum for France's great figures in 1791, shortly after completion.
Léon Foucault suspended his famous pendulum from the dome here in 1851 to demonstrate the Earth's rotation — a working replica still hangs in the nave today.
