Overview & Visitor Introduction

Deep beneath the streets of the 14th arrondissement, the Catacombs of Paris hold the remains of roughly six million people, transferred here from the city's overflowing cemeteries starting in 1786.

Booking is mandatory online — there is no on-site ticket office, and time slots are released a week ahead and routinely sell out within hours.

History & Significance

The tunnels began as limestone quarries that supplied the stone for much of Paris's historic construction, before being repurposed from 1786 onward to relieve the city's overcrowded, unsanitary cemeteries.

Bones from cemeteries including Les Innocents were transferred here and arranged into the walls of bones and skulls that visitors see today, covering roughly 1.5 km of the self-guided route.

City Pass & Ticket Strategy

Compare Paris Passes

The Catacombs are NOT included on any of Paris's five major city passes compared on this site — the Paris Museum Pass explicitly excludes them (alongside the Eiffel Tower, Opéra Garnier, Montparnasse Tower, and Disneyland), and they don't appear in either Turbopass's or Go City's attraction catalogues. A separate, mandatory-online-booking ticket is required regardless of which pass you hold.

Paris Museum Pass

Not included. Explicitly listed as excluded on the official Paris Museum Pass site, alongside the Eiffel Tower, Opéra Garnier, Montparnasse Tower, and Disneyland.

Paris City Pass

Not included. Not one of the Paris City Pass's 22 bundled products; a separate ticket must be booked directly with catacombes.paris.fr, which itself requires mandatory online booking with no on-site ticket office.

Paris Flex Pass

Not included. Not one of the Flex Pass's 25 selectable attractions.

Go City Paris All-Inclusive Pass Plus

Not included. No Go City Paris attraction page exists for the Catacombs; not part of the All-Inclusive Pass Plus's 78-attraction catalogue (which bundles the Paris Museum Pass, and the Catacombs are excluded from that pass too). A separate ticket must be booked directly with catacombes.paris.fr.

Go City Paris Explorer Pass

Not included. Not found in Go City's Paris attraction catalogue — not selectable on the Explorer Pass.
