Palau Güell is an early Gaudí-designed mansion built for industrialist Eusebi Güell between 1886 and 1888, just off La Rambla. Its rooftop, covered in colourful mosaic-tiled chimneys, is one of the most photographed details of any Gaudí building.
General admission (€15.00 standard) includes all visitable areas of the building, the rooftop, and an audio guide. Free-entry days include the first Sunday of every month plus several specific dates.
History & Architectural Significance
Commissioned by Eusebi Güell — the same patron behind Park Güell — Palau Güell was one of Gaudí's first major commissions and shows an early, more restrained version of the style he later developed at Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.
It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, as part of the group inscription recognizing Gaudí's work, and is managed today by the Diputació de Barcelona.
What to See: Top Highlights
The Rooftop Chimneys
20 uniquely-shaped chimneys, each covered in colourful broken-tile mosaic (trencadís) — Gaudí's signature technique.
The Central Hall
A tall, domed central salon that doubled as a private chapel, lit by small star-shaped openings in the dome.
Parabolic Arches & Ironwork
Early examples of Gaudí's structural experiments with parabolic arches, plus an elaborate wrought-iron entrance gate.
