Museu Picasso Barcelona Guide: Tickets, Hours & Free Admission Slots

Museu Picasso Barcelona holds one of the world's largest collections of Picasso's early work, spread across five adjoining medieval Gothic palaces on Carrer Montcada in the Ribera/El Born neighborhood. Standard admission is EUR 14.00 booked online in advance or EUR 15.00 paid at the door, and — importantly — this single ticket covers both the permanent collection and whatever temporary exhibition is running at the time; the museum does not sell entry to the temporary show separately.

Reduced admission is EUR 7.50 for visitors aged 18-25, seniors 65+, students, and unemployed visitors with valid ID, and entry is free for anyone under 18. Advance online booking is recommended to guarantee a slot and skip the ticket line, but it is not mandatory for standard paid entry — you can still buy at the door subject to availability.

Free admission is offered on the first Sunday of every month, on the museum's Open Door days (12 February, 17 May and 24 September) and, from 29 September to 29 March, on Thursday afternoons from 16:00 to 19:00 — but every free slot requires advance online reservation (released four days ahead, from 10:00), unlike standard paid entry. Don't assume you can simply walk in on a free Sunday without a booked slot.

The museum is closed every Monday, plus 1 January, 1 May, 24 June and 25 December. From 31 March to 27 September it opens Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday 09:00-20:00 and Thursday to Saturday 09:00-21:00; from 29 September to 29 March it opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-19:00. On 24 and 31 December it opens 10:00-14:00 only. The ticket office closes 30 minutes before the museum.

If you're planning to visit several Barcelona museums, the Articket BCN combined ticket (EUR 38, valid 12 months, covers 6 museums including Museu Picasso) can work out cheaper than paying for each individually — but it's a broader multi-museum product, not a way to get the Picasso museum for free, and it doesn't replace the reservation requirement for the museum's own free slots.

Picasso spent several formative teenage and young-adult years in Barcelona in the late 1890s and early 1900s, and kept a lifelong connection to the city even after moving to France. The museum opened in 1963, initiated in large part through works donated by Picasso's close friend and personal secretary Jaume Sabartés, with further donations from Picasso himself in later years.

The collection is unusual among Picasso museums worldwide for its heavy concentration on his early, formative periods — Blue Period and Rose Period work, and academic student pieces — rather than his later Cubist output, which is better represented in Paris. The museum occupies five joined medieval palaces on one of Barcelona's oldest streets, themselves notable examples of Gothic civil architecture.
