MNAC Guide: Tickets, Hours & the Free Montjuïc Viewpoint

MNAC (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya) occupies the Palau Nacional, the grand domed palace built for the 1929 International Exposition on Montjuïc hill. General admission is EUR 12.00, and — usefully — a single ticket covers the permanent collection, any temporary exhibition, and the Montjuïc rooftop viewpoint together; the rooftop is bundled into the standard ticket rather than sold as a separate paid add-on.

Free admission applies to children under 16, seniors over 65 (with a general ticket), teachers, ICOM members, and disabled-card holders. MNAC also offers free entry every Saturday from 15:00 and on the first Sunday of the month (all day) — but these free slots require mandatory advance online reservation, unlike standard paid entry, which doesn't require booking ahead.

One common point of confusion: the Font Màgica (Magic Fountain) light-and-water show sits directly in front of the Palau Nacional on the same hill, but it is a completely separate, unrelated attraction with its own free public schedule — it is not part of the MNAC ticket, and MNAC admission doesn't grant any special access to it.

Hours vary by season: winter (Tue-Sat) 10:00-18:00, summer (Tue-Sat) 10:00-20:00, and Sundays and public holidays year-round 10:00-15:00. The museum is closed Mondays, except public holidays.

The Palau Nacional was built as the centerpiece of the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, in a monumental style crowned by a large central dome, and has housed Catalonia's national art collection since 1934.

MNAC's collection spans Romanesque church murals — one of the world's most significant such collections — Gothic altarpieces, and Catalan Modernista and Noucentista art, alongside temporary exhibitions, all under one roof on Montjuïc hill overlooking the city.
