Overview & Visitor Introduction

The Roman Agora was the commercial marketplace of Athens under Roman rule, adjoining the older Ancient Agora, and preserves the Tower of the Winds and the Gate of Athena Archegetis.

Standard admission is €10.00 adult / €5.00 reduced, ticketed via tickets.hh.gr, the official Hellenic Heritage e-ticketing platform. Opening hours vary seasonally, and last admission is 20 minutes before closing.

The site is closed on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Orthodox Easter Sunday, and 25-26 December. Free admission applies on several fixed dates each year, plus the first and third Sunday of each month between 1 November and 31 March.

History & Significance

Built between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD, the Roman Agora served as Athens' commercial marketplace once the older Ancient Agora had become primarily a civic and political space.

Its best-preserved structure, the Tower of the Winds, is an octagonal marble clocktower and weathervane considered one of the world's earliest meteorological instruments.
