Overview & Visitor Introduction
The National Garden is a 156,000 sq m public park between Syntagma Square and the Panathenaic Stadium, created between 1838 and 1840 on the orders of Queen Amalia as a private Royal Garden and opened to the public (and renamed National Garden) after the restoration of democracy in 1974.
Entry is completely free, with no ticket, gate, or booking of any kind. The park has 7 entrances, including a main one on Leoforos Vasilissis Amalias, and is open daily from sunrise to sunset (hours shift with the seasons).
Inside, shaded pathways wind past ponds, small duck and animal enclosures, botanical plantings, and scattered ancient and Roman-era architectural fragments — a quiet, shaded contrast to the Acropolis and the busier archaeological sites nearby.
