Overview & History

The Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady) is Munich's landmark, instantly recognizable by its twin brick towers topped with green copper domes. The cathedral nave is free to enter at any time. What's ticketed is the south tower: a climb (spiral staircase plus a lift) to a weather-sheltered viewing platform with 360-degree views over the old town and, on clear days, the Alps. It is not included or discounted by either current Munich city pass.

What to See: Top Highlights

🗼

Twin Onion Domes

The cathedral's signature silhouette, visible from across the city and a protected element of Munich's skyline (no building in the city center may exceed the towers' height).

🌌

South Tower Viewing Platform

A sheltered 360-degree platform reached by spiral staircase and lift — usable in any weather, unlike St. Peter's open-air tower nearby.

👣

The Devil's Footprint

A dark footprint-shaped mark in the entrance floor tiles, tied to a local legend about the building's windowless-looking nave.

⛪

Free Nave Access

The cathedral interior itself can be visited free of charge at any time — only the tower ascent requires a ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is entry to the Frauenkirche free?
Entry to the cathedral nave is free at any time. Only climbing the south tower to the viewing platform requires a paid ticket (from €7.50 adult).
Does the Munich City Pass or Munich Card include the Frauenkirche tower?
No. Checked directly against both products' own official partner pages — neither the Turbopass Munich Pass nor the Turbopass Munich Card lists the Frauenkirche or its tower as included or discounted.
Is the tower accessible by lift?
Yes — unlike St. Peter's nearby tower, the Frauenkirche's south tower combines a short spiral staircase with a lift, and its platform is sheltered, so it's usable in poor weather.
What are the last-admission times?
Last ascent is 16:30 every day the tower is open (Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:00, Sunday/holidays 11:30-17:00).
