Overview & History
The Asamkirche (officially St. Johann Nepomuk) was built privately by the Asam brothers, Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin, as their own house church next to their residence — which is why it's squeezed into a narrow townhouse plot on Sendlinger Straße rather than standing on its own square. Its compact, densely gilded late-Baroque/Rococo interior, full of theatrical sculpture and concealed lighting effects, is free to visit.
What to See: Top Highlights
Memento Mori Sculpture
A gilded skeleton figure worked into the wall monuments — a theatrical Baroque reminder of mortality typical of the Asam brothers' style.
Concealed Light Effects
A hidden window floods the high altar with light from an unseen source — a signature Asam-brothers staging trick.
Narrow Townhouse Façade
Built into a standard residential plot, the church's cramped, vertical exterior is itself part of its story — there was no public square to build on.
Always Free
No admission ticket of any kind — donations toward upkeep are welcome but not required.
