Overview & History

St. John's Co-Cathedral is the Order of St John's conventual church in the heart of Valletta, and one of the most richly decorated Baroque interiors in Europe — every surface of its barrel-vaulted nave is carved, gilded, or painted, and the floor is paved with over 400 inlaid marble tombstones of the Knights. Its Oratory houses two paintings by Caravaggio, including 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist,' the only work the artist ever signed.

What to See: Top Highlights

⚔️

The Marble Floor of the Knights

Over 400 inlaid marble tombstones, one per Knight, covering the entire nave floor in coats of arms and allegorical imagery.

🎨

Caravaggio's Oratory

'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' — the only painting Caravaggio ever signed — hangs alongside his 'Saint Jerome Writing' in the adjoining Oratory.

⛪

The Langue Chapels

Eight side chapels, one for each langue (national grouping) of the Order, each decorated in a distinct, competing style of Baroque excess.
