Fort St Elmo sits at the very tip of Valletta's Sceberras peninsula, guarding the entrance to both the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. Built in 1552 and made famous by its defenders' stand during the Great Siege of 1565, the fort now houses the National War Museum, whose galleries trace Malta's military history from the Knights of St John through the WWII Siege of Malta and the island's George Cross.
What to See: Top Highlights
The Star Fort Itself
Walk the bastions and parade ground of a fort whose 1565 defence against the Ottoman siege became a defining moment in Malta's history.
The George Cross & WWII Galleries
The National War Museum's collection includes Malta's George Cross and artefacts from the WWII Siege of Malta, one of the most intensively bombed places of the war.
'In Guardia' Historical Re-enactment
On scheduled show days, costumed performers re-enact a 16th-century guard inspection and cannon-firing drill inside the fort.
