See pass compatibility below ↓Overview & Visitor Introduction
St. Nikolai was once one of Hamburg's five main churches and, briefly, the tallest building in the world (1874-1876). Almost entirely destroyed in the July 1943 firebombing ('Operation Gomorrah'), its surviving 147-metre spire was deliberately left standing as a war memorial rather than rebuilt.
A single combined ticket covers both the crypt-level memorial exhibition and a glass panorama lift to a 76-metre observation platform inside the spire — the two are not sold separately.
What to See: Top Highlights
Memorial Exhibition
A crypt/basement exhibition on the 1943 firebombing of Hamburg and the church's destruction.
76m Panorama Lift
A barrier-free glass lift inside the surviving spire, rising to an observation platform with city views.
The Ruin Itself
The 147m Gothic Revival spire, preserved deliberately as a ruin rather than rebuilt — one of Hamburg's most recognizable memorial landmarks.
