Overview & Visitor Introduction

Tierpark Hagenbeck is Hamburg's main zoo — a 25-hectare park with roughly 530 species, still family-operated since its 1907 opening. It pioneered the now-common zoo design of open, moat-bordered enclosures rather than bars, a model copied by zoos worldwide.

The zoo and its separate Tropen-Aquarium (tropical aquarium) are two independently-priced products — a standard zoo ticket does not include the aquarium, and vice versa. A combined ticket covering both is also sold.

What to See: Top Highlights

🦁

Open Enclosures

Naturalistic, moat-separated habitats rather than cages — the design Hagenbeck pioneered and exported worldwide.

🐘

Wide Species Range

Around 530 species across the 25-hectare park, from big cats to elephants to primates.

🐠

Tropen-Aquarium (separate ticket)

A tropical aquarium on the same site, sold as its own ticket or bundled into a combined Zoo + Aquarium ticket.

City Pass & Ticket Strategy

Compare Hamburg Passes

Hamburg CARD gives a flat €2 discount off the standard single-day ticket (€27 instead of €29) — it does not make entry free. Neither Turbopass Hamburg product (the City Pass or the Flex Pass) currently includes or discounts Tierpark Hagenbeck, per Turbopass's own attraction lists — if the zoo is a priority for your visit, budget for it as a standalone ticket regardless of which pass you buy.

Hamburg CARD

Discounted. €2 off the Single-day admission ticket. €27.00 instead of the standard €29.00 at the cash desk with a valid card — a flat €2 discount, not a percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Tierpark Hagenbeck ticket include the Tropen-Aquarium?
No. The zoo and the Tropen-Aquarium are separately priced products (€29 and €25 adult respectively). A combined ticket covering both is available for €45 adult / €33 child, which is cheaper than buying the two separately.
Does the Hamburg CARD make entry to Hagenbeck free?
No — Hamburg CARD only discounts the standard single-day ticket from €29 to €27 (a flat €2 off), confirmed directly on Hamburg CARD's own partner page. It never grants free entry here.
Is Tierpark Hagenbeck included in Turbopass Hamburg?
No. Neither the Turbopass Hamburg City Pass nor the Hamburg Flex Pass lists Tierpark Hagenbeck among its included attractions or discount partners, per Turbopass's own current attraction pages.
