The Bargello is Italy's premier museum of Renaissance sculpture, housed in a fortress-like medieval palazzo that served as Florence's earliest town hall and later a prison, holding masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo, and Cellini.
Standard admission is €12.00 (raised from €10.00 effective 1 February 2026); the reduced rate is €2.00. Since 15 March 2026 the Bargello has been administratively part of the 'Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze e Musei del Bargello' state museum group — a ticketing/governance reorganization, not a closure or relocation.
Free entry applies on the first Sunday of every month ('Domenica al Museo'). Under-18 EU citizens are always free; EU citizens aged 18-24 pay the €2.00 reduced rate.
History & Significance
Built starting in 1255, the Bargello served first as Florence's town hall, then as the residence of the chief of police (the 'bargello'), and later as a prison, before opening as Italy's first national museum in 1865.
Its collection is considered the finest assembly of Renaissance sculpture anywhere, including Donatello's bronze David — the first freestanding nude sculpture since antiquity — and early works by a young Michelangelo.
