Overview & History

Fløibanen is Bergen's much-loved funicular railway, hauling nearly two million passengers a year up the 302-meter climb to the summit of Mount Fløyen, one of the 'Seven Mountains' that ring the city. The six-to-eight-minute ride passes three intermediate stops before opening onto sweeping views over Bergen's red-roofed rooftops, the harbor, and the surrounding fjords — with a network of walking trails, a troll-themed forest walk, and a café and restaurant waiting at the top.

What to See: Top Highlights

🚡

Panoramic City & Fjord Views

The summit platform gives an unbroken view over Bergen's Old Town, Bryggen, the harbor, and the surrounding mountains — best at sunrise, sunset, or after fresh snow.

🥾

Summit Walking Trails

A network of marked footpaths fans out from the top station, from a short troll-themed forest walk for families to longer hikes toward neighboring peaks.

🎫

One-Way or Return, Your Choice

Ride up and walk down (or vice versa) on a one-way ticket, or take the funicular both ways on a return ticket — both are sold at every ticket window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fløibanen included free with the Bergen Card?
No — the Bergen Card only discounts the return fare (corroborated at around 100 kr adult in summer), confirmed on the card's own attractions page; it does not make the ride free.
Do ticket prices change with the season?
Yes — summer (1 Apr-30 Sep) return fares are noticeably higher than winter (1 Oct-31 Mar) fares, and a winter-only senior discount applies.
Can I just ride one way and walk the other?
Yes — one-way tickets are sold at every ticket window, so you can ride up and hike down (or the reverse) on the marked summit trails.
