Perched atop a dramatic artificial mound, Clifford's Tower's distinctive quatrefoil (four-lobed) stone tower dates from around the 13th century and is one of York's most recognizable landmarks. The mound upon which Clifford's Tower stands was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror following the Norman Conquest of England. The original wooden fortress was rebuilt in stone in the 13th century, creating the distinctive stone tower still visible today. The tower served as a royal fortress and symbol of Norman power in northern England. Tragically, the site is also marked by the memory of the 1190 massacre of York's Jewish community. Today, the tower stands as a testament to medieval architecture and York's complex, multifaceted history.
