What The Ticket Includes

CRITICAL FACT, independently confirmed via the chapel's own official Musei Reali page: the actual Shroud relic is NOT displayed or stored in this chapel. It has been kept since 1993 in a protective conservation case in a separate chapel in the last bay of the left nave of Turin Cathedral (Duomo di Torino), next door, and is exhibited to the public only rarely, at intervals decided by the Vatican — it was NOT on public display as of this audit's verification date. This chapel (Guarini's Baroque architectural work, reopened 27 Sept 2018 after a 21-year restoration following a 1997 fire) is part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Residences of the Royal House of Savoy' listing.

Overview & Visitor Introduction

The Cappella della Sacra Sindone (Chapel of the Holy Shroud) is Guarino Guarini's Baroque architectural masterpiece, built specifically to house the Shroud of Turin, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed 'Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.' A catastrophic 1997 fire badly damaged the chapel's dome; after a 21-year restoration it reopened to the public on 27 September 2018.

IMPORTANT: the Shroud itself is not kept or displayed inside this chapel. Since 1993 it has been stored in a protective conservation case in a separate chapel in the last bay of the left nave of Turin Cathedral (the Duomo, immediately next door), and it is only physically exhibited to the public on rare occasions decided by the Vatican — it was not on public display as of this guide's verification date. Visitors come to see Guarini's chapel architecture itself, not the relic.

What to See: Top Highlights

🏛️

Guarini's Dome

A dizzying geometric dome of interlocking stone arches receding upward toward a light-filled oculus — one of the most studied works of Baroque engineering in Europe.

⚫

Black Marble Interior

The chapel is built almost entirely from dark Frabosa marble, a deliberate, dramatic contrast meant to evoke mourning and reverence for the relic it was built to house.

⛪

Turin Cathedral, next door

The adjoining Duomo di Torino (free entry) is where the actual Shroud is now kept in its conservation case, and can be visited separately without a Musei Reali ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the actual Shroud of Turin in this chapel?
No. Since 1993 the Shroud itself has been kept in a protective case in a separate chapel in the last bay of the left nave of Turin Cathedral next door, not inside the Cappella della Sacra Sindone. Public expositions of the physical relic are rare and decided by the Vatican.
Is there a separate ticket just for this chapel?
No — it's only accessible as part of the unified Musei Reali ticket (€15.00 adult), the same admission that covers Palazzo Reale, the Armeria Reale, the Sabauda Gallery, and the Museum of Antiquities. No standalone chapel ticket is sold.
Is the Chapel of the Holy Shroud included on the Torino+Piemonte Card?
Yes, free, via the same Musei Reali unified admission the card covers for Palazzo Reale — there's no separate step needed.
Can I visit Turin Cathedral (where the Shroud actually is) for free?
Yes — the Duomo di Torino next door is a working cathedral with free entry, open daily 09:00-12:30 and 15:00-19:00, and does not require a Musei Reali ticket.
