Kiek in de Kök is Tallinn's tallest surviving cannon tower, its Low German name roughly translating to 'peep into the kitchen' after the view its gunners once had into the chimneys of the lower town. Today it anchors a single combined museum ticket covering four connected medieval towers — Kiek in de Kök itself, the Maiden's Tower, the Marstall Tower, and the Short Leg Gate Tower — plus the Bastion Passages, a network of 17th-18th century underground tunnels built beneath the bastions and later used as a Soviet-era civil defense shelter.
What to See: Top Highlights
Six Floors of Fortification History
Exhibits on Tallinn's defensive walls and siege history spread across the tower's six floors, with cannons and models showing the fortification system at its medieval peak.
The Bastion Passages
Guided walks through the underground bastion tunnels, used variously for storage, as a Soviet-era bomb shelter, and — briefly — as an impromptu home for Tallinn's homeless in the 1990s.
Four Towers on One Ticket
A single admission covers Kiek in de Kök, the Maiden's Tower, the Marstall Tower, and the Short Leg Gate Tower, tracing roughly 500 meters of the Old Town's fortification line.
