Overview & History

St. Peter's Church is Riga's tallest structure and one of the oldest and most significant examples of medieval monumental architecture in the Baltic states, first recorded in 1209. Its distinctive tiered steeple has been rebuilt repeatedly after storms, fires, and wartime destruction — most recently after Nazi German artillery burned the building down on 29 June 1941, with restoration completed only in 1983. A lift installed inside the modern steel-framed spire carries visitors up to an observation platform roughly 72 meters above the Old Town, one of Riga's most popular viewpoints over the UNESCO-listed historic centre and the Daugava River.

What to See: Top Highlights

🌆

The Observation Platform

A lift from the third floor carries visitors to a viewing gallery roughly 72 meters up, with panoramic views over the Old Town's red rooftops, the Daugava River, and the harbour beyond.

⛪

A 500+ Year Rebuilding Story

The steeple has collapsed or burned and been rebuilt multiple times — an octagonal 1491 spire fell in a 1666 storm, a 1721-fire rebuild reached 120.7 m in 1746, and the whole tower was destroyed again in 1941 before its current form was finished in 1983.

🐓

The Gilded Weathercock

A gold-plated rooster weathervane has topped the steeple in various forms since the 15th century; the current bird is the seventh in the church's history, raised in 1970 during the postwar reconstruction.

Compare Riga Passes

No confirmed free entry or discount could be verified for St. Peter's Church on any pass. Neither Go City nor Turbopass operates in Riga (confirmed absent from both providers' own published destination lists), and the only private multi-attraction product, the Riga Pass (rigapass.lv), publishes its full benefits list only as an image graphic and does not confirm this attraction anywhere independently checked in this research — treat any discount as unconfirmed rather than assume it applies.

Individual ticket

Buy directly on-site or via the church's own official site.

How high is the observation platform?
A lift from the third floor carries visitors up to a viewing gallery roughly 72 meters above the ground — well below the spire's full 123.5-meter height, but still one of the best panoramic views over Riga's Old Town.
Is St. Peter's Church included on any Riga city pass?
No confirmed inclusion was found. Neither Go City nor Turbopass operates in Riga, and the private Riga Pass discount club does not publish a verifiable, machine-readable list confirming this attraction — budget for the ticket price directly.
