Town Hall Square (Rātslaukums) is the historic civic heart of Riga's Old Town, framed by the ornately gabled House of the Blackheads, the reconstructed Riga Town Hall, and a replica of the square's 1897 Roland statue — a symbol of civic freedom and justice found in many former Hanseatic League cities. Much of the square and its surrounding buildings were destroyed in the Second World War and only rebuilt between 1996 and 2000, in time for Riga's 800th anniversary in 2001. Like the rest of Vecrīga (Old Riga), the square is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Historic Centre of Riga, inscribed in 1997, and costs nothing to visit.
What to See: Top Highlights
The House of the Blackheads
Riga's most photographed building fronts the square with its ornate stepped gables — a 1996-2000 reconstruction of the 1334 Hanseatic guild hall destroyed in 1941 (see the dedicated guide for ticket details).
The Roland Statue
A granite knight bearing a sword and shield, symbolizing civic freedom and justice; the current statue is a 2000 replica of the original 1897 monument, destroyed in the Second World War.
Riga Town Hall (Rātsnams)
The square's namesake building, also rebuilt after wartime destruction and reopened alongside the Blackheads Hall for the city's 800th anniversary.
