Overview & History

Perlan ("The Pearl") sits atop Öskjuhlíð hill inside a glass dome resting on six geothermal hot-water storage tanks that still help heat the city. Inside, the Wonders of Iceland exhibition covers a real man-made ice cave, a glacier exhibition, the Áróra Northern Lights planetarium show, and displays on Icelandic volcanoes and wildlife, before opening onto a 360-degree observation deck over Reykjavík, Faxaflói Bay, and the surrounding mountains. A single ticket type covers every exhibition, the planetarium show, and the observation deck — there is no separate, cheaper observation-deck-only ticket.

What to See: Top Highlights

🧊

The Ice Cave

A roughly 100-meter man-made tunnel built from hundreds of tons of real ice and snow, kept at sub-zero temperatures year-round.

🌌

Áróra Northern Lights Show

A planetarium-format show simulating the Aurora Borealis, a useful stand-in for visitors touring outside the winter viewing season.

🔭

360° Observation Deck

An open-air deck circling the glass dome's exterior, with panoramic views over Reykjavík's rooftops to Mount Esja and the sea, plus a revolving restaurant on the same level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Perlan included on the Reykjavík City Card?
No — this is a genuine exclusion. Perlan appears only in the card's partner-discount list, offering a reduced rate on admission rather than free entry. Confirm the current discount percentage with Perlan or the card's terms before your visit.
Can I buy an observation-deck-only ticket?
No — Perlan sells a single ticket type that includes every exhibition, the planetarium show, and the observation deck together. There's no cheaper deck-only or exhibition-only option.
Is Perlan the same as the Blue Lagoon?
No — Perlan is an in-city Reykjavík museum on Öskjuhlíð hill with an artificial ice cave and observation deck. The Blue Lagoon is a separate geothermal spa well outside the city and is not covered by this guide or by any Reykjavík city pass.
