Hallgrímskirkja is Reykjavík's defining landmark, its stepped concrete facade designed by state architect Guðjón Samúelsson to echo the basalt columns and glaciers of the Icelandic landscape. Construction stretched across four decades, from the crypt's completion in 1948 to the tower's finish in 1974 and the nave's consecration in 1986. Entry to the church itself is free and unticketed; the only paid element is the elevator ride up the 74.5-metre tower for a 360-degree view over Reykjavík's colourful rooftops toward Mount Esja and the sea.
What to See: Top Highlights
Basalt-Inspired Facade
The church's stepped concrete columns are modeled on Iceland's hexagonal basalt rock formations, a design that took Guðjón Samúelsson decades to see built.
The Tower Viewpoint
A lift and short stair climb lead to an open-air platform below the spire, giving one of the best panoramic views in Reykjavík over the city's colorful rooftops.
The Klais Organ
A 15-meter, 5,275-pipe organ built by Johannes Klais of Bonn dominates the nave — the largest pipe organ in Iceland, occasionally heard during free recitals.

Location & Google Maps
Is Hallgrímskirkja Included on the Reykjavík City Card?
Compare Reykjavik PassesNo — neither the church (already free to everyone) nor the paid tower appears among the Reykjavík City Card's 17 included museums and attractions. Confirmed against the card's own official inclusion list on visitreykjavik.is. Go City and Turbopass are both confirmed absent from Reykjavík entirely, so no pass of any kind discounts the tower ticket.
Reykjavík City Card
Not included. Confirmed absent from the Reykjavik City Card's 17-attraction inclusion list, checked directly against the card's own official page. The nave is separately, always free regardless of any pass; the paid tower ticket is not discounted or included by the card.
