Osaka Castle's Main Tower (Tenshukaku) is an 8-floor reconstruction of the keep first built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583, rebuilt in concrete in 1931 and last renovated in 1997. Inside, a museum spans the castle's history and Hideyoshi's unification of Japan across several floors, leading up to an observation level with panoramic views over Osaka Castle Park's moats, stone walls, and the modern city skyline beyond. The park and grounds surrounding the tower are free and open at all times — only the tower's museum interior charges admission.
What to See: Top Highlights
The Golden-Accented Keep
Gold-leaf tiger and phoenix motifs on the black-and-white exterior recreate Hideyoshi's original ornate design, a deliberate display of wealth and power.
The Top-Floor Observation Deck
The 8th floor opens onto a wraparound observation level with views across the park's stone walls and moats to the Osaka skyline.
Osaka Castle Park's Free Grounds
The moats, massive stone walls (among the largest hand-cut stones in Japan), Nishinomaru Garden, and plum/cherry-blossom groves are free to explore at any time, with or without a Tenshukaku ticket.
