Overview & History

The Promenade des Anglais is Nice's most iconic landmark: a wide, palm-lined seafront walkway curving for roughly 7 km along the Baie des Anges, from the Old Port toward the airport. Belle Époque façades — including the famous Hôtel Negresco — line one side, while pebbled beaches and rows of blue chairs face the Mediterranean on the other. It began in 1824 as a coastal path funded by the British Reverend Lewis Way to provide work for local residents after a harsh winter, and gradually grew into the promenade that bears the English community's name.
