Teatro di San Carlo is the oldest continuously active opera house in the world, predating both La Scala in Milan and the Paris Opera. Its horseshoe-shaped auditorium, tiered in red velvet and gold, is one of the great interiors of European theatre architecture.
Outside of attending a performance, the only way to see the auditorium is on a scheduled 30-minute guided tour — there is no self-guided or walk-in visit. Full admission is EUR 9.00, with a reduced rate for under-30s.
History & Significance
Commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon and opened in 1737, decades before La Scala (1778), San Carlo set the template for the horseshoe-shaped Italian opera house. A fire gutted the auditorium in 1816, and it was rebuilt within about a year in essentially its current form.
The theatre has staged premieres by Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini, and remains a working opera and ballet house today, with guided daytime tours run around its performance and rehearsal schedule.
