Overview & Visitor Introduction
The Cappella Sansevero is a small chapel in the historic center of Naples, famous above all for the Veiled Christ (Cristo Velato), a marble sculpture whose carved 'veil' over the body is so thin it appears to be real fabric.
Unlike most Naples attractions, walk-in entry is not possible — booking is mandatory, with releases opening 60 days ahead and a further release 2 days before the visit date. Adult admission is EUR 12.00.
History & Significance
The chapel was commissioned as a family burial chapel and rebuilt in its current Baroque form in the 18th century by Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero — a nobleman famous for his interests in alchemy, engineering, and the occult, which fueled centuries of legend about how the Veiled Christ's marble 'veil' was actually created.
The chapel also houses other notable sculptures, including 'Disillusion' and 'Modesty,' each carved with the same illusion of a translucent veil over the marble figure beneath.
