The Mucem is Marseille's flagship national museum, spread across three linked sites at the entrance to the Vieux-Port: the striking J4 cube, wrapped in a fine concrete lattice designed by Rudy Ricciotti, the medieval Fort Saint-Jean it connects to via a 135-metre footbridge, and the Conservation and Resource Centre. Since opening in 2013, it has become one of the symbols of Marseille's modern waterfront, hosting major permanent and temporary exhibitions on Mediterranean and European civilisations alongside 360-degree views over the harbour and the sea from its rooftop terraces and ramps.
What to See: Top Highlights
The J4 Building & Concrete Lattice
Rudy Ricciotti's cube-shaped J4 building, wrapped in a fine concrete mesh, is one of Marseille's most photographed pieces of contemporary architecture, with 360-degree sea views from its roof terrace and outdoor ramps.
Fort Saint-Jean
A 135-metre aerial walkway links J4 to the historic Fort Saint-Jean, guarding the harbour entrance since the 13th century and now itself an exhibition venue — free to walk its outdoor spaces even without a ticket.
Permanent & Temporary Exhibitions
One ticket covers all current exhibitions across both J4 and Fort Saint-Jean, exploring Mediterranean history, culture, and society from antiquity to today.
