Château d'If is a 16th-century fortress on a small rocky island just off Marseille, built originally to defend the harbour and later converted into a notorious state prison. It owes much of its fame to Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Monte Cristo, whose hero Edmond Dantès is imprisoned here — a fictional cell still draws visitors today alongside the fortress's genuine history and its 360-degree views back over Marseille and out to the Frioul islands. It's one of the city's most-visited sites, drawing more than 100,000 visitors a year, and is only reachable by boat.
What to See: Top Highlights
The Fortress Courtyard & Ramparts
Walk the 16th-century ramparts and courtyard built under François I, with panoramic views back across the bay to Marseille and Notre-Dame de la Garde.
The Count of Monte Cristo's Cell
A cell associated with Alexandre Dumas's fictional hero Edmond Dantès is one of the fortress's most-visited spots, alongside genuine cells that once held real political prisoners.
The Boat Crossing Itself
The short ferry ride from the Vieux-Port is part of the experience, passing close by the Frioul islands with sea-level views of Marseille's coastline.

Is Château d'If Included on the Marseille CityPass?
Compare Marseille PassesYes — the Marseille CityPass includes free admission to the monument itself (weather permitting; the crossing can be suspended in poor weather, and the site is closed on Mondays in winter) plus one round-trip boat crossing to If or Frioul.
