Overview & History

Málaga Cathedral, formally the Catedral de la Encarnación, took over two and a half centuries to build (1528-1782), spanning Renaissance and Baroque styles. Funds earmarked for its second bell tower were redirected to help the American colonies fight in the U.S. War of Independence — leaving the tower permanently unfinished and giving the cathedral its beloved nickname, "La Manquita" (the one-armed lady). The interior holds an important choir stall collection carved by Pedro de Mena.

What to See: Top Highlights

⛪

The Unfinished South Tower

The literal source of the "La Manquita" nickname — construction funds were diverted in the 1780s and the second tower was never completed.

🪑

Pedro de Mena's Choir Stalls

An 18th-century carved wooden choir considered one of the finest works of Spanish Baroque religious sculpture.

Included Audioguide

General admission includes a free audioguide in 10 languages, covering the cathedral's architecture and side chapels.

Is Málaga Cathedral Covered by the Malaga Pass?

Compare Malaga Passes

Unclear — the evidence genuinely conflicts, so we're not going to guess. The City of Málaga's own relaunch announcement for the Malaga Pass lists dozens of included museums and monuments but never mentions the Cathedral (which, unlike most of the pass's roster, is administered by the Diocese of Málaga, not the municipality). One independent travel guide explicitly states the Cathedral is excluded from the pass; another lists it as included. Until malagapass.com's own attraction list can be checked directly, don't assume it's covered — buy your Cathedral ticket directly from malagacatedral.com to be safe.

Malaga Pass

official sources currently disagree — check current conditions when booking. Two independent secondary sources disagree on Cathedral inclusion, and the official municipal press release's own list is silent on it — plausible given the Cathedral is Diocese-administered, not a municipal asset like the rest of the pass's roster. Represented as a conflict rather than asserted either way; the public-facing Cathedral guide page treats it as NOT confirmed pending a direct check of malagapass.com's own attraction list.
