Overview & History

Gibralfaro Castle crowns the hill above the Alcazaba, connected to it by a defensive corridor of walls (the coracha). Built by the Nasrid sultan Yusuf I as a military barracks and lookout, it withstood a three-month siege by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487 before the city fell. Today visitors walk the full circuit of ramparts and towers for panoramic views over the port, bullring, and city rooftops, with a small on-site interpretation center covering the castle's military history.

What to See: Top Highlights

🌅

The Rampart Walk

A roughly 30-45 minute circuit along the full castle walls, with the best panoramic views over Málaga's port, bullring, and old town.

🗺️

Interpretation Center

A small on-site exhibition space covering the castle's Nasrid-era military role and the 1487 siege that ended Muslim rule in Málaga.

🔗

La Coracha (the Connecting Wall)

The fortified corridor linking Gibralfaro down to the Alcazaba — visible from the ramparts, tracing the historic defensive line between both fortresses.

Is Gibralfaro Castle Covered by the Malaga Pass?

Compare Malaga Passes

Only partially — a genuine nuance worth knowing before you rely on the pass here. The official Malaga Pass's own published attraction list names the on-site "Centro de Interpretación del Castillo de Gibralfaro" (interpretation/exhibition center), not general admission to the castle walls and ramparts. Walking the full rampart circuit still requires the standard €7 (or €10 combined-with-Alcazaba) ticket, regardless of holding the pass.

Malaga Pass

Conditional. The pass's own attraction list (per the official Promalaga relaunch press release) names only the "Centro de Interpretación del Castillo de Gibralfaro" (on-site interpretation/exhibition center) — not general admission to the castle walls and ramparts, which still requires the standard €7 (or €10 combined-with-Alcazaba) ticket regardless of holding the pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Malaga Pass include Gibralfaro Castle?
Only partially — the pass's own attraction list covers just the small on-site interpretation center, not general admission to the castle walls and ramparts, which you still pay for separately (€7 solo or €10 combined with the Alcazaba).
Is Gibralfaro combo-ticketed with the Alcazaba?
Yes — a €10.00 combined ticket (adult) covers both monuments and must be used at both within 48 hours of first use, independent of the Malaga Pass.
Is there a day with free entry?
Yes — entry is free every Sunday from 14:00, plus on Andalusia Day (Feb 28), International Museum Day (May 18), and European Heritage Days.
