Overview & Visitor Introduction
The Thyssen-Bornemisza completes Madrid's 'Golden Triangle of Art' alongside the Prado and Reina Sofía, built from one of the 20th century's largest private art collections (assembled by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family and acquired by the Spanish state in 1993).
It's the smallest and fastest-to-visit of the three, but covers a wider historical span in one building — from medieval Italian panel painting through to 20th-century American art — than either of its two neighbors alone.
History & Significance
Housed in the restored 1806 Palace of Villahermosa on the Paseo del Prado, the museum opened to the public in 1992 to display the Thyssen-Bornemisza family's private collection, one of the most comprehensive privately-assembled art collections of the modern era.
The Spanish state acquired the core collection in 1993, and the museum later added the separate Carmen Thyssen Collection, broadening its holdings further into Impressionism and 19th-century American painting.
