Overview & Visitor Introduction
Retiro Park is Madrid's largest central park, originally laid out as royal gardens in the 1630s and opened to the public in 1868 — today it's free, enormous, and anchored by a boating lake overlooked by the Monument to Alfonso XII.
Entry is free at every gate, with no ticket of any kind. A rowing boat on the Estanque Grande lake is a popular paid add-on, but nothing in the park requires it.
What to See: Top Highlights
Estanque Grande & Monument to Alfonso XII
The park's central lake, with rowing-boat rental and a grand colonnaded monument on its eastern shore.
The Rose Garden (Rosaleda)
Hundreds of rose varieties in a formal garden setting, best visited in late spring.
Fallen Angel statue
A notable 19th-century statue reputed to be one of the few public monuments to Lucifer anywhere in the world.
