The Monument to the Great Fire of London is a 202-foot fluted Doric column designed by Sir Christopher Wren, standing exactly 202 feet from the Pudding Lane bakery where the Great Fire of 1666 is thought to have started.
Climbing its 311 spiral steps to the viewing platform makes it the tallest isolated stone column in the world you can climb, rewarding visitors with panoramic views over the City of London — and a certificate for making it to the top.
Unlike many London attractions, tickets are sold only on the day at the attraction itself — there is no online pre-booking for individual visitors.
History & Significance
The Great Fire of London broke out in the early hours of 2 September 1666 at Thomas Farynor's bakery on Pudding Lane, destroying more than 80% of the City of London and leaving roughly 100,000 people homeless over the following days.
Built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the fire and the City's rebuilding, the column was designed by Christopher Wren (who also designed the rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral) in collaboration with Robert Hooke, and remains a defining symbol of the City's recovery.
