Kew Gardens (the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) is a 132-hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest London and the world's leading botanic garden, growing more plant species than any other garden on Earth.
Highlights include the Victorian Palm House and Temperate House glasshouses, the elevated Treetop Walkway through the forest canopy, and The Hive — a 17-metre multi-sensory installation about pollination and honeybees.
Kew publishes separate peak and off-peak prices rather than one year-round figure, and tickets are cheaper booked online in advance than bought at the gate. HRP (Historic Royal Palaces) members get a 10% discount here — not free entry — and, once inside, free seasonal entry to the separate Kew Palace and Great Pagoda.
History & Significance
Kew's gardens grew out of the royal estates at Kew and Richmond from the 1750s, with the Princess of Wales' private garden later merged into what became the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Palm House, completed in 1848, was one of the most ambitious glass-and-iron structures of its era and remains an iconic symbol of Victorian engineering.
Today Kew is both a major visitor attraction and a working scientific institution, holding one of the world's largest and most diverse plant collections and playing a leading role in global plant conservation research.
