Cathédrale Saint-André is Bordeaux's Gothic cathedral, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, and the site of Eleanor of Aquitaine's 1137 marriage to the future Louis VII. Entry to the cathedral itself is free. Because the cathedral's foundations couldn't support a heavy bell tower, the free-standing Tour Pey-Berland was built separately alongside it — climbing its 231 steps (a separate, paid ticket) leads to a panoramic terrace beneath a gilded 19th-century statue of the Virgin Mary.
What to See: Top Highlights
The Royal Gate
A richly carved 13th-century Gothic portal on the cathedral's north side, among the best-preserved Gothic doorways in the region.
Tour Pey-Berland Climb
231 steps up the free-standing bell tower to an open-air terrace with 365° views over Bordeaux's rooftops and the Garonne.
The Golden Virgin
A gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, added in 1863, crowns the tower and is one of the most recognizable silhouettes on the Bordeaux skyline.

Is This Covered by the Bordeaux City Pass?
Compare Bordeaux PassesThe cathedral itself is always free, with or without any pass. Whether Tour Pey-Berland is included on the Bordeaux Métropole City Pass could not be independently confirmed — the tower is operated by the Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN), a separate national body from the city pass's own published attraction list — so this is left NEEDS_VERIFICATION rather than assumed.
Bordeaux Métropole City Pass
Cathedral entry needs no pass at all (always free); the tower's own pass-inclusion status is unconfirmed.
