The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the world's oldest continuously operating salt mines, mined from the 13th century until 1996 and inscribed on UNESCO's first World Heritage List in 1978. Its Tourist Route descends through chambers carved entirely from rock salt, including the underground Chapel of St. Kinga, with salt-carved chandeliers, altars, and sculptures. Despite being marketed everywhere as a Krakow day trip, the mine sits in the separate town of Wieliczka, outside Krakow's own city and transport-zone limits.
What to See: Top Highlights
Chapel of St. Kinga
A full underground church carved from salt, roughly 54 by 18 meters, with salt chandeliers and wall reliefs — still used for Mass and weddings.
Salt-Carved Sculptures
Historic figures rendered in rock salt throughout the route, including a bust of King Casimir the Great, commemorating his role in regulating medieval salt mining.
Underground Saline Lakes
Brine lakes within the mine chambers, remnants of the natural saline deposits that made Wieliczka commercially vital for centuries.
