Helsinki Cathedral is the white, green-domed Lutheran cathedral overlooking Senate Square, the centrepiece of Carl Ludvig Engel's Neoclassical redesign of central Helsinki after Finland's capital moved from Turku in 1812. Raised on a granite outcrop and reached by a long flight of steps, its central green dome surrounded by four smaller domes has made it Helsinki's most photographed landmark and the silhouette most associated with the city's skyline from the harbour.
What to See: Top Highlights
Senate Square Facade & Steps
The cathedral's grand granite staircase and colonnaded facade form the visual anchor of Senate Square, one of the finest Neoclassical ensembles in Europe.
The Green Domes
A central dome flanked by four smaller domes, added in a later 1848 redesign, gives the cathedral its distinctive silhouette on the Helsinki skyline as seen from the sea.
The Crypt
An accessible entrance at the Crypt hosts exhibitions and events; note that the Crypt is closed during the winter months.
