The Belfry of Ghent is one of the city's three landmark towers, alongside Saint Bavo's Cathedral and St. Nicholas' Church, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Belfries of Belgium and France. Construction began in 1313 as a symbol of civic (rather than religious or noble) power, historically housing the city's charters, seal, and treasury alongside the bells that rang out for both celebration and alarm. An elevator from the first floor carries visitors up past the treasury room and the tower's gilded dragon weathervane exhibits toward views over the medieval city centre.
What to See: Top Highlights
The Gilded Dragon Weathervane
A dragon has topped the Belfry's spire since the 1380s, a symbol as recognisable on Ghent's skyline as the tower itself.
The Treasury Room
Once home to the city's charters, seal, and privileges — the physical proof of Ghent's medieval civic independence.
The Carillon
The Belfry still houses a working carillon, part of a centuries-old tradition of civic bell-ringing.
Views Over the Three Towers
From the tower, see across to Saint Bavo's Cathedral and St. Nicholas' Church, Ghent's other two landmark spires.
