历史与意义
1599 年建造的原版环球剧院由莎士比亚自己的剧团建造，1613 年在上演《亨利八世》时因炮声效果点燃茅草屋顶而被烧毁，后来重建，并最终在 1644 年清教徒统治下被拆除。
现代重建版由美国演员兼导演山姆·沃纳梅克（Sam Wanamaker）倡导，于 1997 年在距原址约 230 米处开放——采用同样的木构架技术建造，其茅草屋顶是 1666 年伦敦大火以来伦敦少数获准使用的茅草屋顶之一。
