The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, in Barcelona's El Born district, is considered one of the purest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture, built in a single, unusually fast 54-year construction span (1329-1383).
A single unified €8.00 ticket covers the basilica interior, gallery/museum space, crypt, towers and roof terraces. Outside the paid 'cultural visit' hours, basic admission to the basilica (excluding the towers/roof terrace) is free.
History & Architectural Significance
Built largely by donations and labor from the Ribera district's own dockworkers and merchants, Santa Maria del Mar is closely associated with Barcelona's medieval maritime trade — a connection dramatized in the novel and TV series 'Cathedral of the Sea.'
