这处遗址自古代起就设有防御工事——传说诗人维吉尔的魔法蛋（城堡名称由来）被封在其地基的某处，只要蛋不破，就能保佑那不勒斯。现存建筑主要建于 12 世纪诺曼人统治时期，后来又经过安茹和阿拉贡王朝的改建。
