Free, unrestricted access to the square itself at any hour. Surrounding cafes, restaurants and shops under its arcades are independently owned and separately priced. Built 1617-1619 under King Philip III and officially opened in 1620, designed by Juan Gomez de Mora; historically used for markets, bullfights, and (in its darker history) Inquisition trials and public executions. Not a ticketed attraction and not a line item on any Madrid city pass.
